Child Employment and Licensing

Performance Licensing - There are many talented young people in Hartlepool, who take part in amateur dramatic performances, national touring productions, modelling assignments, TV commercials, films and West End musicals.  Young people who are of 'compulsory school age' and under (even babies) may need to have a performance licence.

It is essential that the producers of shows or any event involving young people contacts the child employment and licensing officer to discuss the schedule.  Licences do not cost anything but may be legally required, as this depends on the type and length of any production, and what each child has been involved in during the previous 6 months.

Licenses should be applied for at least 21 days before the event, though they may be produced quicker in exceptional circumstances.  Failure to comply with the legislation may result in producers being fined up to £1000 for each child without a licence or taking part in an event outside of permitted hours.

Child Employment - Employment permits are required by all school aged young people who have a part time job in Hartlepool.  This includes any work in family establishments whether this is paid or unpaid 'helping out'.  Young people must be at least 13 years old before they can undertake any part time work.  It is the employer's legal responsibility to ensure all such young people have a work permit and the hours worked comply with national legislation.  Failure to comply may result in fines up to £1000 for each child working without a permit or outside of permitted working hours.
