Short Breaks for Disabled Children

Short Breaks for Families of Disabled Children

Short Breaks for Families of Disabled Children is about transforming services for disabled children and their families ‘The vision is for all families of disabled children to have support they need to live ordinary lives’.

In April 2011 the break for carers of disabled children regulation 2010 came into force, which meant local authorities:

  • Have a duty of care to make provision
  • Identify the type of services which must be provided
  • Produce a Short Break Statement to set out its intentions

Are you a parent or carer of a child with additional needs or disabilities?

If you are a parent or carer of a child or young person aged between 0 – 18 years, the local authority in partnership with the Parent Led Forum ( 1 Hart 1  Mind 1  Future), has developed a number of short break provisions to support families to have a break from caring without the need of a social care assessment.

In addition to provision, the following is also offered to support parents and carers:

Short Break Training Programme

We provide a comprehensive training programme free to parents and carers to support them in a variety of areas. This programme has been developed in conjunction with the parent led forum and is updated on a regular basis.

To enable parents and carers to access the training we can support the funding of a childcare place with a registered provider and Travel to avoid any barriers to training.

1 Hart 1 Mind 1 Future

1 Hart 1 Mind 1 Future is a recognised Parent Carer Forum (PCF) for Hartlepool and was established in 2008.

This is a group of parents and carers of children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Disabled children aged 0 -  25 years who work alongside the local authority, education , health and other service providers to make sure they plan, commission, deliver and monitor the needs of children and families.

The group does this through active parent participation and ensuring that parents have a voice.

As a Forum it works closely with Hartlepool Borough Council’s Short Break Lead to identify areas in which families feel short breaks could benefit them, whether this be a residential to Carlton Outdoors to after school activities.

1Hart 1 Mind 1 Future believes it is important to enable families of children with SEN and Disabilities to live a fulfilling active life.

The forum has a number of social and recreational opportunities where the whole family can go along to meet other families in similar situations. They also hold Cake & Cuppa mornings with guest speakers.

The group works closely with many other services to enable the reduction in isolation to families in Hartlepool and help to increase resilient parents.

If you want to register with the group and be part of contributing and shaping services in the future or to find out what’s going on, you can either contact the group by writing and sending your query to:
