The Hearing Impaired Service

Sensory, Teaching, Advisory and Resources Service - Supporting Hearing and Vision Loss Across Teesside

We work with 0 -25 years who have a sensory loss, hearing, vision or both (multisensory impaired).  We support babies and young people from the time they are referred through to when they leave education.  The level of support is determined by nationally agreed guidelines issued by NatSIP and can vary from weekly visits through to an annual check-up depending on the level of need.  We work across Stockton, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Redcar & Cleveland with almost 1000 young people on our caseload.  For a child with a hearing loss a referral must come through audiology, for a child with a vision loss there is an open referral system.

We organise and run parent and toddler group sessions to allow families to meet others in a similar situation to help support with ideas and activities.  We also organise social events for older children with a sensory loss to enable them to develop friendships and access peer support locally.

Our service is mainly composed of teachers who have undertaken additional training to help them understand the impact of sensory loss on teaching and learning and the strategies on how to minimise this.  We work with families in their homes and then support into the choice of educational establishment. We can deliver training to adults working with young people to ensure they are aware of the difficulties and can offer appropriate support, this is done either at the educational establishment or at our base in Whinney Banks.

We work with medical professionals where appropriate to establish the most effective equipment that may be needed and offer advice and training on using it.  To help with this we have an Education Audiologist, an Audiology Assistant and an IT access support worker.

The aim of our service is to ensure all young people reach their full potential and are as active in society and as independent as possible.  We also have a Habilitation Officer and Habilitation Assistant to help us achieve this with young people with a visual impairment.
