Scallywags Day Nursery

Over View
At Scallywags we truly understand the confidence and trust placed in us by each of our parents when they choose to place their child in our care.
When you visit us, you will see a warm and homely environment, with staff who are dedicated to the children in their care. Our approach considers the development of the whole child and provides care and learning opportunities which reflect this, for example Spanish tuition, music and movement, baby massage and yoga classes, outdoor learning and Fittots.
Our Nursery is situated on Warrior Drive and we care for children from birth to eight offering not only sessional and full time childcare including wrap around but also holiday clubs, breakfast clubs and after school clubs.
The team at our nursery are dedicated, professional individuals who have all been commended by Ofsted specifically for their caring and gentle manner with the children. Each of our room supervisors have been chosen for their abilities to lead their room and particular age group of children. They all possess the professional qualifications and skills which support each child’s stage of learning.
They have an excellent understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage and provide wonderful role models for staff and children. Encouraged by Sarah, they are driven to continually improve their knowledge of children’s care, learning and development.
Baby & Toddler Room
Our staff in baby room understand the very specific needs of the babies in their care. In this rapid stage of all areas of a child's development, it is vitally important that staff caring for your child provide an environment which is secure, happy, stimulating and above all where a trustful bond can develop between children, staff and parents. Our dedicated baby room staff understand this and each child is cared for according to their individual requirements and routine.
Babies are learning from birth and at Scallywags, our staff are trained to encourage, listen and respond to babies’ communication, even at a very early age, promoting language development by singing songs and rhymes and talking to them. Our babies love exploring different textures and have lots of activities to stimulate their interests and encourage learning and development. But, perhaps more importantly, they will always have a caring member of staff to look after them, providing reassurance, cuddles and helping them to feel safe, cared for and valued, whilst in our care.
Tweenie Room
At this stage, children’s language is developing rapidly as well as their physical and social skills. Our Tweenies become much more independent and want to make more use of their environment. Playing with other children is an important part of a child’s learning at this stage, as well as the provision of a stimulating and inspiring environment for them to explore.
Regular routine is important for our Tweenies and this is provided through expected activities, such as mealtimes, stories or nap time. However, throughout the day our staff will encourage your child to initiate their own interest and learning through the provision of lots of exciting activities and areas of interest, such as sand and water play, mark making areas, outdoor learning, imaginative play, messy play, book corner and home corner.

Pre-School Room
At Scallywags, we don’t just view this stage as simply preparing children for school, but an important phase of development in its own right.
Our staff are trained and skilled in working with this age range of children and understand the importance of encouraging their learning by providing many opportunities for children to explore, ask questions, enjoy activities and socialise with other children. Activities are always varied so that children can experience different materials and resources, with everything easily accessible to the children so they can follow their own interests, which skilled staff can then help them build on. We provide a balance of adult-led activities, such as stories and “circle-time”, with child-initiated play, ensuring children can take the initiative in their own learning.

Health & Nutrition
A key part of our success at the Scallywags is the importance we place on the health and nutrition of your child. We were awarded the Golden Apple Healthy Eating Award and also the Hartlepool Healthy Early Years Setting Award and our meals are designed to be well-balanced and nutritious and are all freshly prepared by our nursery cook. There are no pre-prepared meals offered to children, each meal is prepared and cooked daily, using fresh ingredients sourced from the local butcher and fruit and vegetable shop. Our children also help to prepare meals and serve themselves. We feel this allows the children independence and to gain essential skills for later in life.
We also place great importance on ensuring children are well hydrated throughout the day, encouraging them to drink water at regular intervals and particularly when there is physical activities and at meal times. Each child has a water bottle with their photograph and name on so they are easily identifiable and can be used throughout the day at the child’s discretion.
Dental hygiene is encouraged also, with children brushing their teeth as part of their daily routine, after lunch. Hand-washing is also encouraged regularly.
Any vegetarian or special dietary needs can be catered for easily. This will be managed through regular communication with the manager and the nursery cook.
Baby Meals: We will take our lead from you when the time arrives for weaning. Our manager and nursery cook will work with you to ensure an appropriate weaning diet, utilising fresh fruit and vegetables. If you are breastfeeding your baby and would like to visit the nursery to do this, please feel free at any time. Alternatively, you may wish to supply us with bottles each day. Our staff will work with you to ensure your baby is fed in the manner and the time that you would like.
